Reports to Site Plant Manager with indirect alignment to the Business Process Automation Leader based on project assignments. No direct reports to this position. Job is highly integrated with the global Arkema Coating Resins manufacturing plants. Initial alignment for the next 3 years will be as key team member for the DCS replacement project in the St Charles facility.
Job dimensions
This role serves as technical resource in the areas of manufacturing, process automation and control systems, plant reliability, cost management and HES performance/compliance to assist work teams in daily functions by optimizing plant operations of a batch emulsion polymerization plant.
Travel to other sites or supplier locations may be r equired based on need.
Must be able to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
Activities
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Understand all applicable process technology, equipment and control systems.
- Serve as technical project resource for the DCS replacement in St. Charles, leveraging knowledge of existing plant operations to support new DCS design.
- Assist in development of detailed functional specifications for programming in the new DCS.
- Lead the development of a new control system batch recipe format and individual batch recipe development.
- Participate in project commissioning and start up activities, including tuning of control loops, validations of alarms and interlocks, as well as overall control code functionality per the specification
- Communicate technical information and issues to plant personnel and technology centers.
- Work with local teams and implement best practices to optimize operations and meet business/plant goals (HES, quality, cost, production, etc.)
- Participate in advance troubleshooting of existing process control code, including development of detailed scope of work for future process control projects or improvements.
- Support plant leadership as needed to improve HES performance. Ensure unsafe conditions are corrected and communicate in a timely manner.
- Provide support to manufacturing plant staff in training on process control code and functionality.

- Report all health, safety, environmental and quality (HSEQ) near-miss, accident or injury incidents to their supervisor and the HES Coordinator or site manager through means identified during orientation or refresher training.
- Remain in compliance with the rules, standard procedures and work instructions related to the specific job title and site location.
- Complete assigned training through Arkema learning management system or attendance to assigned Web-Ex or Instructor Led Training (ILT) classes.
- Employee will be provided tools and references during orientation or during initial and refresher training to ensure his/her access to and knowledge of these expectations.
Context and environment
This position is located at the St Charles site. Works with limited supervision from Plant Manager and/or Business Process Automation Leader. Receives general direction concerning the required objectives and results expected including timing constraints and priorities.
Will work with R & D, plants and contractors to improve plant operations (Process Safety, Quality, Productivity and Cost), through process automation troubleshooting and improvements.
Accountabilities
Responsible for prioritization of work, time tracking, and regular communication of results.
Expected to follow normal engineering practices and guidelines, including consideration of safety and waste control minimization.
Expected to develop and implement process automation strategies, conduct engineering calculations accurately in developing and implementation of new or improved processes.
Qualifications / experience required
Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or related technical field required minimum of 2 years of experience in:
Chemical manufacturing; maintaining, updating and programming process control systems. Emulsion Polymerization on production scale (safety hazards, technical methods, etc.) New product scale up (from lab scale to commercial scale). Handling of monomers and understanding of chemistry involved with handling monomers in emergency response situations. Process Safety (Layers of Protection Analysis - LOPA). Root cause investigation strategy. Familiarity using process control systems, programming and troubleshooting is highly desirable. Six Sigma experience preferred. Strategic thinker with strong analytical skills and solid knowledge/experience with HES performance and compliance, cost management, plant reliability, product quality and personal development.
